I think time appears to speed up as we get older because we have less new experiences. New experiences feel as though they take more time because we are using our senses and brains to record what we are seeing. When compared to common experiences, they feel much slower. As we get older, we have more repeated or regular experiences than when we are young and still new to the world.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Maddi. I believe the more experiences and events a person has in their life, the more time it takes up because our brain is more focused on them. Time seems to go faster. As a person gets older the amount of new experiences they have decrease and time begins to move slower.
DeleteI think time appears to slow down as a person gets older because of something that happens in their brains. Like the guy on the radio said, as a person gets older their idea of the duration of a minute stretches. I think the more a person thinks of the time, the slower it appears to pass, but the less a person thinks of the time, the faster it appears to pass. Even though time doesn't change, it just seems that way.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Alexis. I do think that once a person hits a certain age in his or her life it may seem like its going by slower, because they have experienced life. They may want to appreciate life for that little things.
DeleteIt's a phenomena of thinking. With an increased amount of experiences and actions a person acts upon, the greater the variety becomes of different thoughts to occur in the brain. This also brings up the possibility that there are even more 'sub-thoughts' to add to those big topics. With more subjects to think about it may feel as though time speeds up because you're so deep into thought, you're pulled away from the attention of time. This also brings up the saying, "Time flies when you're having fun." Time appears to go along more quickly when you're in the act of something enjoyable, or to your liking, because you have more brainstorming thoughts occurring. And when you feel bored and time seems to be as slow as molasses, it's just as constant but, it appears to be perceived slowly because you're not in the act of that 'enjoyable moment'.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with you. I think it is just the way you think about time and what you do during that time. When we do think about it, it may seem like hours but when we tend not to think about it, the speed variation will change in your head like it was only 5 minutes, yet it was still the same.
DeleteI don't personally believe that times speeds up. Yes it may appear that way to some people, but if time speeds up does that mean that there isn't always 60 seconds in a minute? 60 seconds would always be a minute no matter if it fells like its going by quick or not!
ReplyDeleteI agree with this because time will always be time. Time never changes, it only appears to change. I think for time to appear slow or fast, it depends on how engaged we are in a situation that is new or maybe old.
Deletei agree with you brandi, it what you are saying is totally correct, but i think what you are talking about is more of the obvious of time always being the same rather than how long something feels to be like. for example, if something is boring, tome seems like this thing will never end, yet to another person who thinks it's cool and fun, it would seem rather short compared to your experience.
DeleteLike Zoe and John said, you're right that time is constant no matter how old you are. However, the question isn't "Does time actually speed up as we get older?" Rather, it's asking why time appears to move faster to an older person than a younger person.
DeleteI think that time speeds up because we are all growing and developing each day. We learn new acquirement's each day. From my point of view, i think that time speeds up because we do not pay attention to what actually goes on around us. Not everything we do we give our full attention to, giving our life experience time to slow as we live it but then the memory speeds up in our minds as we get older almost feeling like it was yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you in saying that as you get older your not paying attention to as much because when your expiriencing something that you have already been through multiple times before, your brain kinds of skims over it rather than try to absorb everything thats going on like it would the first time you do something.

ReplyDeleteCan I say that I think it is a combination of many things that creates the illusion of time speeding up? Some things that I think contribute to this are; a day is a smaller porportion of your life when your older than when your younger, and as you get older you have fewer new expirences so your brain isnt paying as close attention to things as it would be if the person had never expirenced it before.
ReplyDeleteI believe that when we get older time seems to speed up because we don't always experience new things. For example when we get older our daily routine is almost the same each day, so our brain doesn't have to work hard to process the same things and this makes time feel faster. I think that time doesn't really speed up it just feels that way because we aren't as engaged in things we do everyday as we would be if we were experiencing something new everyday.
ReplyDeletei believe like i said earlier, that time is only a certain amount, so when we are younger, that amount of time seems so much larger than when you are older and you have so much more to fit into that segment.
